Glasgow Airport’s stress reducing soundscapes also significantly increased retail sales.
Airports tend to be stressful places. BAA tasked us with creating and installing sound that would reduce that stress in Glasgow Airport, despite being able to use only a limited number of PA loudspeakers in common areas such as walkways and departure lounges.
We designed and installed generative soundscapes for daytime and nighttime use, both played at an ambient level that was barely perceptible, and in many cases not consciously noticed by passengers.
Reactions were overwhelmingly positive. A three month trial showed that sales in the airport’s shops rose by 2-8% when the soundscape was playing.
