Glasgow Airport’s stress-reducing soundscapes significantly increased retail sales.
Airports tend to be stressful places. BAA tasked us with creating and installing sound that would reduce that stress in Glasgow Airport.
Working with a limited sound system comprising PA loudspeakers in common areas such as walkways and departure lounges, we designed and installed generative soundscapes for daytime and nighttime use. Both were played at an ambient level that was barely perceptible, and in many cases not consciously noticed by passengers.
Traveller reactions were overwhelmingly positive, and a three-month trial indicated that sales in the airport’s shops rose by up to 8% when the soundscape was playing.
